Intrusion detection (prevention) systems (IDS/IPS) are already widely used in an information network, but their popularity is growing as well in the industrial environment due to the recent security incident, especially in energy sector. However, to build strong defense via IDS/IPS high-quality data are needed, but these often sensitive data are not easy to obtain. Therefore, the smart grid testbeds start to appear across the world to provide an experimental test environment and also provide sufficient data models. This paper focused on smart substation as a crucial part of the distribution network in the Smart Grid. The paper provides extensive analysis of Smart Grid protocols with close focus on promising protocol IEC 61850. The communication and the data model is provided and an inexpensive experimental environment is introduced.
